What is the Yala card?

The Yala card is the virtual card of Mi Teleférico — the first virtual public-transport card in Bolivia, launched in 2021. It lives inside the official «Yala Mi Teleférico» app and replaces the plastic card: instead of tapping a card on the gate, you show a QR code from your phone.

With the app you can check your balance — both the virtual card and any physical cards you register — add credit with a debit or credit card from any bank without queuing at the ticket window, work out what a trip will cost between two stations and look back at your trip history.

The practical advantage is simple: at rush hour the long line at a station is not the one for boarding — it is the one at the ticket window. With Yala you arrive with credit already loaded and walk straight to the gate.

The Yala card in one minute

How the Yala virtual card of Mi Teleférico works: you top it up in the app and go through the gate by showing the QR code.

How to check your Yala card balance

1
Open the «Yala Mi Teleférico» app
Install the official app and sign in to your account. The home screen shows the balance of your virtual card, updated in real time.
2
Add your physical cards
The app can also show the balance of plastic cards. Register them in the app and you will see how much credit is left without going to a station.
3
At any station ticket window
If you would rather not use the app, staff at the ticket window can check the balance of a physical card at any station on the network.
4
At the gate
When you validate at the gate, the reader itself displays the remaining balance after the fare has been deducted.
Careful: the balance on the Yala virtual card and the balance on a physical card are two separate balances. Topping up the app does not top up the plastic card, and vice versa.

How to top up your Yala card

1
Top up online from the app
In «Yala Mi Teleférico» tap Recargar (top up), enter the amount and pay with a debit or credit card from any bank. The credit lands on the virtual card straight away and you can do it at any hour, even when the cable car is closed.
2
Top up with cash at a station
At the ticket windows of any station on the network you can load credit in cash, either onto a physical card or onto your account.
3
Travel with the QR code
Once you have credit, open the app, show the QR code at the gate and walk through. There is no need to carry the plastic card.
4
Check what the trip will cost first
The app works out the cost of a trip between two stations. You can also do it here with the route planner, which shows the lines, the transfers and the fare.
Tip: top up the night before. The queues at stations first thing in the morning are people waiting to pay, not people waiting to board.

Price of the plastic card: the official sources contradict each other on what a physical card costs and how much starting credit it comes with, so we prefer not to quote a figure. Confirm it at the ticket window of any station before you buy one.

Yes — that is the whole point of the virtual card. You go through the gate by showing the QR code generated by the app, with no plastic in your pocket.

Yes, the app calculates the cost of a trip between two stations. You can also do it with the route planner on this site, which additionally tells you which lines to take and how many transfers are involved.

On the La Paz and El Alto network, and also on the Oruro line, which is run by the same state-owned company.

The credit on the virtual card is tied to your account, not to the handset: sign in again on another device and you get your access back. With an anonymous plastic card, by contrast, the credit is lost along with the card.
